Understanding the Love of Christ

When we talk about the love of Christ, we are not talking about ordinary love. We are talking about a love that reaches us at our lowest, stays with us in our weakness, and never gives up on us.

The Bible says:

“We love him, because he first loved us.”

—First Epistle of John 4:19

Before you ever prayed, before you ever tried to change, before you ever got things right — Christ loved you first. Live in that love and make sure you show it, when you love you don't only show it, it will transform in a write like attitude you will see men as precious as your eyes ball.

1. His Love Is Not Based on Your Performance

Many of us think God loves us more when we are doing well and less when we fail. But that is not how Christ loves.

The Bible says:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

—Epistle to the Romans 5:8

He did not wait for us to become perfect. He loved us in our mess. He loved us when we were confused, broken, and far from Him. That's the love we are talking about, a love that doesn't look at a mistake to find a room for judgment, a love that doesn't look at your vocabularies to sooth human. An unconventional love that's the love we are talking about. A love that when you have 10 naira in your hand and that's the least you have you are able to give it to someone without looking back.

That means His love is not earned — it is given.

2. His Love Was Proven on the Cross

Love is easy to say. It is harder to prove.

Jesus proved His love by giving His life.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

—Gospel of John 15:13

The cross is the clearest picture of Christ’s love. He took our place. He carried our sin. He endured pain so we could have peace.

Whenever you doubt His love, look at the cross.

3. Nothing Can Separate You from His Love

Life can make us feel abandoned. Pain can make us feel forgotten. But Christ’s love does not walk away.

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life… shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

—Epistle to the Romans 8:38–39

Not your past.

Not your mistakes.

Not your fears.

Not even your worst day.

His love remains.

4. His Love Is Personal

Jesus does not just love “the world” in general. He loves you personally.

Paul said:

“…the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

—Epistle to the Galatians 2:20

Notice he said“loved me.”That makes it real.

Christ knows your name. He sees your tears. He understands your silent prayers. His love is not distant — it is close.

5. His Love Changes Us

When you truly understand Christ’s love, something shifts inside you.

Fear begins to lose its power. Shame begins to fade. Hope begins to grow.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”

—Second Epistle to the Corinthians 5:17

His love does not just comfort you — it transforms you.

6. How Should We Respond?

When we understand how deeply we are loved, we begin to love differently.

Jesus said:

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

—Gospel of John 13:35

The proof that we understand His love is that we show love — kindness, patience, forgiveness, grace.

Final Thoughts

Understanding the love of Christ is not about knowing big theological words. It is about knowing this simple truth:

You are loved.

Not because you are perfect.

Not because you deserve it.

But because Christ chose to love you.

And His love will never fail.

“Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love…”

—Book of Jeremiah 31:3

May you not only understand His love — may you rest in it.
